A year of success for both club and country on the
hockey field earned Raphael Govia the Sportsman of the Year
award at the Queen's Park Cricket Cub's annual awards function,
at the Banquet Hall, Queen's Park Oval on Friday evening.
Govia beat out a field that included Imran Jan, the former
national player who returned to local cricket this season
following a year's absence through suspension to lead the
Parkites to the Carib Sunday League 50-over competition title
and second place in the Eastern Credit Union National League.
Jan was named Queen's Park's Cricketer of the Year.
Govia got the nod for his roles as player, captain and
coach of Queen's Park, who won the national men's hockey
title this year for the first time in six years. He was also
a member of the national squad who clinched the inaugural
Caribbean Cup tournament last month.
On a night when members throughout the club were honoured,
former West Indies Cricket Board president Ken Gordon was
given an award in recognition of the Chaconia Medal Gold he
received for his contribution in the field of business at
this year's Independence Day celebrations.
Forbes Persaud, cricket administrator and current CEO of the
Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, also a national awardee
this year, was recognised, too, as a non-Parkite, for his
contribution.
