Magnolias stop Checkers' Winning Streak


 

 


 

 



 
CARIB Magnolias halted Maritime Harvard Checkers' four-game winning streak with a hard-fought 2-0 triumph, while Notre Dame hammered Corona Fatima 6-0 as action in the Men's and Women's Championship Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board competitions continued at the National Hockey Centre last weekend in Tacarigua.

In the third-to-last event on the Father's Day programme before an encouraging crowd, Magnolias got field goals from Alicia Waithe and national player Stacy Siu Butt.

Waithe netted her item in the 29th minute to give the ladies in yellow a 1-0 lead going into the break, after both clubs had even exchanges in the first 35 minutes of the 70-minute encounter.

Six minutes after the resumption, prolific Siu Butt put Checkers' unbeaten run in further danger when she hit the target in the 41st minute. In the remaining moments of the second half, both teams engaged in an end-to-end battle in search of more goals, but good goalkeeping by the pair of custodians prevented any additional scoring.

The win pushed Magnolias record for the season to three wins from the same number of matches, while Checkers slipped to their first defeat from a handful of outings. In the final game of the night, national skipper Kwan Browne netted four times to pace Notre Dame to their third triumph of the new campaign.

Browne had field goals in the fifth, 26th and 37th minute, while adding a penalty corner in the 40th minute. The other couple of efforts came off the sticks of Ken Whiteman, who scored from a penalty corner in the 45th and Akill Nancoo, who netted in the 61st minute of the one-sided contest via a field goal.

Notre Dame led 2-0 at the break. It was Fatima's first loss in four games, while drawing two and winning one.

Paragon Hockey Club established made it two wins in a row after losing their first pair of matches when they were very impressive in humiliating defending champions Queen's Park Cricket Club 4-2 in a men's match-up.

Doing the job for Paragon-coming off an equally impressive triumph over former champs Defence Force (3-2)-were Keil Murray (ninth and 27th minutes) and Dillet Gilkes who struck the mark in the 37th and 60th minutes.

Matthew Tang Nian also registered a brace for the champs, scoring in the seventh and 44th minutes.

In a result from the Trinity Women's Division, Raiders edged Ventures 2-1 after a goalless first half. Chantal Fernandes notched both items for Raiders through a penalty corner and penalty shot in the 48th and 61st minutes in a close game.

In the boy's under-19 category, Corona Fatima and SHAPE shared the points in a 3-3 draw. Jordan Butts (23rd and 30th) and Quinn Clarke (64th) were the marksmen for the winners, who led 2-0 at half time.

Gerron Frank claimed all three items for SHAPE, hitting the mark in the 43rd, 62nd and 68th minutes.

On Saturday, QPCC were 3-0 winners over Notre Dame in another U-19 match.

And in a Trinity Women's game, also last Saturday, there were no goals in the affair between Ventures and Maritime Harvard Checkers. Play in the in the TTHB competition continues tomorrow and over the weekend.
