Reigning Under-21 World Cup and Pan American champions
Argentina face a familiar foe from 7 p.m. today at
Tacarigua's National Hockey Centre as the 2008 Junior
Pan American Hockey final pits Argentina against South
American rivals, Chile.
Both finalists are already guaranteed a place in the
2009 Junior World Cup in Singapore, but Argentina will
not concede their Pan American crown lightly and the
clash of the region's finest exponents of the art.
Argentina won all five games at Tacarigua so far with
47 goals scored and just two conceded. Canada, who
defeated Chile in a group fixture, were expected to push
them but were overrun 6-1 in Thursday night's first
semi-final.
Chile, despite their loss to Canada, still mustered a
commendable tally of 43 goals scored to two against
although they played one match more than their Argentine
counterparts. They were equally impressive at the
semi-final stage with a 6-0 triumph over the United
States.
The United States play Canada from 4.30 p.m. in
arguably the day's most important match. The winners get
a bronze and, more significantly, a chance to join
Argentina and Chile at the Singapore World Cup
tournament next year.
Trinidad and Tobago are in action too as they meet
Puerto Rico at 10.30 a.m. in a rematch of a Group A
fixture, which the host nation won 3-1. T&T have gone
off the rails since with successive losses to Argentina,
the US and Barbados. Captain Akim Toussaint and company
would hope to end their tournament on a sweet note today
and secure seventh place from the 11 competing teams.
Barbados, already assured of finishing as the
Caribbean's top outfit, tackle Mexico from 2 p.m. to
decide fifth and sixth spot, while Jamaica challenge
Brazil for ninth place at 8 a.m.
Guyana, who finished last, are the only participants
who will not grace the turf today. -Lasana Liburd
