her Questions and Answers Series with leading sportsmen
and women and today she locks horns with NICK CHAMPNESS.
The world of sport opens one's eyes to some
phenomenal players and some unthinkable thrills which
tickles the fancy of fans young and old. At the Banks
Hockey Festival in Barbados, last week, Champness of
England was the eye-catcher for the tournament, winning
the hearts of many as he plied his hockey stick
regardless of his one-arm disability. After his 2005
debut at the tournament, Champness wooed the crowd once
more last week, playing with topnotch Banks' regulars,
Old Gold Roosters Hockey Team. His strange, but
effective manoeuveres on the field of play proved to his
opponents that his disability was not an obstacle to his
athletic prowess.
"When rivals play against me, within the first few
minutes they realise that one arm does not render me a
lightweight, and soon enough they treat me as an
ordinary player," he says.
Champness was born with just one arm, his left.
However, in growing up he was an avid sportsman, playing
golf, badminton, cricket and hockey. At age 31, he's
still a sports fanatic. He plays cricket, badminton and
hockey for English clubs and has even represented his
county in cricket and hockey.
Additionally, he is the five-time title-holder-the
2007 title being his most recent feat-of the World One
Arm Golf Championships. When Champness is not on the
field or court, he works as a purchasing manager for a
cargo airline.
Amidst all walks of life, he always remains
optimistic and enjoys every second life has to offer.
"If I had to do it all over again, I would keep my one
arm. Without it I would have missed the opportunity to
meet the famous athletes and people that I have through
sport!" he asserts with his signature smile.
